Gas Detectors Tubes

Gas detector tubes are small, thin, glass tubes that contain a chemical reagent. When a gas sample is drawn through the tube, the chemical reagent reacts with the gas and changes color. The length of the color change indicates the concentration of the gas in the sample. These tubes can be used as a quick and convenient way to measure the concentration of a variety of gases in the environment, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulfide, and ammonia, among others. With a gas detector tube, you can detect the presence of a specific gas in the atmosphere. Gas detector tubes can be used to detect flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. The detector tubes consist of a sealed glass tube containing reactive chemicals coated onto inert support particles. Each tube is filled with sorbent granules, which change color depending on the type of gas you’re measuring.

Gas detector tubes are an effective tool for quickly and semi-quantitatively measuring the presence of specific gases or vapors in the air. Here's how they work:

 

  • Tube Selection: First, you need to select the appropriate gas detector tube for the gas you wish to measure. Each tube is designed to detect a specific gas or vapor.
  • Tube Preparation: The gas detector tube consists of a glass tube containing chemicals that react with the target gas. Before using the tube, you need to break off both ends and attach a manual or automatic gas pump to one end.
  • Gas Sampling: To take a sample, insert the open end of the tube into the air in the area of interest. Then, using the gas pump, draw a specific volume of air through the tube.
  • Chemical Reaction: As the air passes through the tube, the target gas undergoes a chemical reaction with the chemicals inside the tube. This reaction produces a color change or a stain on a specific part of the tube, which is proportional to the concentration of the gas in the sampled air.
  • Reading the Tube: After sampling, examine the tube for any color change or stain, and compare it to the accompanying scale printed on the tube. This scale provides an estimate of the gas concentration in the sampled air.

    It’s important to note that gas detector tubes provide only an approximate measurement, and their accuracy may vary depending on several factors. They are most commonly used for short-term measurements and as a tool for initial gas detection and identification. For more precise and continuous monitoring, other types of gas detection instruments may be necessary.
